American Express Cobalt is my first choice for flexible travel rewards when the household's grocery stores accept Amex. Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite is the cleaner cash-back answer with broader Visa acceptance. BMO CashBack World Elite posts a higher 5% headline rate, but its CA$500 monthly grocery cap is low enough to change the winner for many families.
The quick picks
Best flexible rewards
American Express Cobalt
Earns 5 Membership Rewards points per CA$1 on eligible eats and drinks in Canada, including grocery stores, on up to CA$2,500 per month. Points can transfer to Aeroplan. The CA$191.88 annual cost and Amex acceptance gap are real drawbacks.
Best simple cash back
Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite
Earns 4% cash back on eligible grocery and recurring payments, up to a CA$25,000 annual spend limit for that accelerated tier. The annual fee is CA$120 and Visa acceptance is broader than Amex.
Best headline grocery rate
BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard
Earns 5% on the first CA$500 of grocery purchases in each statement period, then 1%. The CA$139 annual fee and CA$80,000 personal income requirement make it a narrower winner than the 5% headline suggests.
Best for Empire grocery stores
Scotiabank Gold American Express
Earns 6 Scene+ points per CA$1 at participating Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland and related stores, then 5 points at other eligible grocers. It costs CA$120 and charges no foreign transaction fee.
Best for Loblaw households
PC World Elite Mastercard
Has no annual fee and returns 3% in PC Optimum points at participating Loblaw-banner grocery stores, 4.5% at Shoppers Drug Mart and 1% elsewhere. It requires CA$80,000 personal or CA$150,000 household income.
Best flexible no-fee card
Tangerine Money-Back
Has no annual fee and earns 2% in two chosen categories, or three when rewards go to a Tangerine Savings Account. Everything outside those categories earns 0.5%.

Why caps change the result
A family spending CA$1,000 a month on groceries would earn BMO's 5% rate on only the first CA$500 of each statement period. The other CA$500 earns the 1% base rate. That produces CA$360 a year before the annual fee, not the CA$600 implied by applying 5% to every grocery dollar.
Scotia Momentum's 4% tier has a much higher CA$25,000 annual spending limit, although recurring payments share the category. Cobalt's CA$2,500 monthly limit is also generous for most households, and the value depends on how Membership Rewards points are redeemed. A basic statement-credit redemption and a high-value Aeroplan transfer are not the same result.
Scotiabank Gold Amex applies its 6-point, 5-point and 3-point accelerated rates to the first CA$50,000 in qualifying annual purchases. Once the threshold is exceeded, the regular rate applies. That cap is unlikely to constrain groceries alone, but it matters when dining, entertainment, gas, transit and streaming are also charged to the card.
Store acceptance and merchant coding
Ask where you buy groceries before comparing percentages. Costco Canada warehouses accept Mastercard, not American Express or Visa. A Cobalt or Scotia Gold Amex rate has no value at a checkout that cannot take the card. PC Financial's strongest grocery return is tied to participating Loblaw-banner stores, not every supermarket.
Merchant coding creates a second filter. Card networks assign category codes based on the merchant, not the items in the basket. A superstore, wholesale club, convenience store or delivery service may not be classified as grocery even when most of the purchase is food. Issuers make that limitation explicit in their program terms.
The practical approach is dull but effective: check the network logos at your regular stores, review a statement after the first small purchase and confirm that the accelerated reward posted correctly.
Who should skip a premium grocery card
Skip a paid grocery card when the incremental rewards do not beat the fee. At CA$300 a month in groceries, moving from a no-fee 2% card to a 4% card adds only CA$72 a year before considering rewards from other categories. That does not recover a CA$120 fee on groceries alone.
Also skip Amex-first strategies when your regular stores do not accept Amex. A theoretically stronger multiplier should not force you into a different supermarket or leave you reaching for an unrewarding backup card every week.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best grocery credit card in Canada?
Amex Cobalt leads for flexible points when your stores accept it and you redeem Membership Rewards well. Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite is the better simple cash-back pick for broader acceptance. PC World Elite is compelling for Loblaw and Shoppers households that meet its income requirement.
Does Costco count as groceries on a credit card?
Do not assume it does. Costco Canada warehouses accept Mastercard and generally do not code like a conventional grocery store. Compare Mastercard base earn or a Costco-specific return instead of using a card's grocery headline.
Do grocery earn rates have limits?
Many do. Cobalt uses a monthly food-category cap, BMO uses a statement-period grocery cap and Scotia Momentum uses annual accelerated-category limits. Read the cap before estimating annual rewards.
Are grocery points better than cash back?
Only when you use the points well. Cash back has a clear value. Membership Rewards can be more valuable after an airline transfer, while Scene+ and PC Optimum are easier to redeem inside their retail ecosystems.
The Short Version
Choose Cobalt for transferable points, Scotia Momentum for straightforward Visa cash back, BMO for a smaller grocery budget under its cap, Scotia Gold for participating Empire stores, PC World Elite for the Loblaw ecosystem and Tangerine for flexible rewards without a fee. Your store list matters more than the largest percentage on the page.
