Research checked August 29, 2026A ranking tells you what is best on average. A calculator tells you what is best for you, which is usually a different answer. These tools exist because the arithmetic that decides a credit card question, category caps, annual fees and what a loyalty point is actually worth, is tedious enough that almost nobody does it by hand.

Two mistakes account for most of the gap between what Canadians expect from a rewards card and what they actually receive. The first is ignoring category caps, which stop a headline earn rate part way through the year without any notice on the statement. The second is comparing point multipliers across programs whose points are worth different amounts, which makes an 8x card look four times better than a 2x card when it may be worse.
Both are arithmetic problems rather than judgement problems, which is exactly what a calculator is for. The card calculator handles the first and the points value calculator handles the second. They share the same underlying database and the same point valuations, so they will not give you contradictory answers.
Run your own numbers before trusting any ranking, including the ones on this site. If a tool here disagrees with a card's marketing, check the caps and the point valuation first, because that is almost always where the difference comes from.
